Marc Babcock Meets Tiny Shed LA

Marc Babcock just wants to have fun playing music.

After hand building studio acoustic panels that could be linked together, hung up and placed on walls for the Tiny Shed LA, we were eager to test out the space and get some feedback from a local musician. It was after a solid week of rain here in Los Angeles when Marc Babcock joined us. Unfazed by the weather, he shook out his jacket and enjoyed the rain through the shelter of the shed.

“Music always made me feel understood so if I create something that does that for one person I would say my goal has been accomplished.”

Marc is a Massachusetts bred multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter hybrid. He is known most popularly for spending his time playing in bands, Andy Leon and Guppy. However, in the midst of these projects he has finally begun the process of recording every instrument that will be featured on his own full-length album. He’s a bit of a one-man-band, and he surrounded the shed with just that.

“It's an intimate and blank space so it really has the ability to breed creativity that you can't always get in your home or a space that is filled with a lot of outside influence.”

Swelling guitar sounds and bellowing vocals filled the shed with songs old and new as he embraced the freedom of playing outdoors, an element of the Tiny Shed experience he does not have at his own living space. Marc's solo experience in the shed lead him to discuss the collaborative element of the space and how he imagines jamming with artists he hasn't met or played with before.

We were excited to have Marc at Tiny Shed LA to not only hear how about he uses music to make sense of the world, but also to learn more about his creative process and experience with jamming in the shed solo. Read our full interview with him below.

Tiny Shed LA: How was your experience/time in the shed?
Marc Babcock: My time in the shed was great. I felt like I had the space to just let some new stuff go. It's an intimate and blank space so it really has the ability to breed creativity that you can't always get in your home or a space that is filled with a lot of outside influence. But if I am to come back I would really like to try and collaborate with some other artists because with a space of that size I think you could create something really great through collaboration.

TSLA: Different from a home or recording studio?
MB: Absolutely. It's an indoor/outdoor space which was a big plus for me. Being in a home studio or a recording studio sometimes you can feel a little trapped in but having the trees and the sky right there in front of you gives you a sense of freedom. Obviously you aren't going to get the same quality audio wise as you would in a studio but it definitely adds to the ambiance and the feel of the music because its a sound you aren't going to necessarily be able to find in another room.

TSLA: What are your musical goals? What do you hope to achieve through musical expression?
MB: I just want to play music and have fun doing it. Hopefully I can make some people's days a little better along the way and maybe make someone feel like they aren't alone. Music always made me feel understood so if I create something that does that for one person I would say my goal has been accomplished.

TSLA: Favorite social media platform for people to find your music?
MB: I'm most active on instagram for sure (@marcbabs2). Through my instagram you can find a link to my Spotify which has all my solo music to this date. I also have some older demos and EPs on my SoundCloud and BandCamp pages.

TSLA: Anything else you'd like to share with your fans?
MB: Just to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and continues to support me. From my family to my friends to my girlfriend to all my music teachers, teachers, and coaches. I couldn't do any of this without the love I have received along the way so I'm just trying to give a little bit of that back.
